Angry Birds Birthday

I know, I know, I have fallen behind in my 30 Days of Blogging Challenge.  I really should have considered the craziness of my schedule when I started doing this challenge.  Last week I traveled to Las Vegas for the Mr. Olympia Expo and yesterday was my son’s 4th birthday!  Between the two events I just ran out of time to blog.  So, instead of catching up and doing multiple blog posts per day I am just going to keep going from here and the 30 days will be extended a little bit.  Today is the 20th post in my challenge, you can click here to read more about this crazy challenge I gave myself to blog 30 days in a row….then I took weekends out….then I missed a few days….but it still is 30 blog posts pretty darn close together.
Blogging ChallengeYesterday was my little man’s 4th birthday.  I know every mom says this, but I seriously cannot believe how fast four years has gone by!  My sister put this cute collage together on Instagram (btw my sister is a hair stylist in Provo, UT and is amazingly talented if you are looking for someone to do your hair @megan_webster).
Lincoln1I miss my cute little chubby baby!  But, of course, they need to grow up.  Here are a few things he is doing these days:
-loves soccer and is quite good at it (he scored four goals this weekend *proud mama*)
-is super sweet with his sister and has never been mean to her and will sing to her when she cries
-is a really good eater and will eat (well at least try) almost anything we give him
-he throws epic temper tantrums and has learned that now gets instant time outs when he throws them
-he is a very emotional kid on both ends of the spectrum.  Incredibly sweet and kind but also gets very upset and sad when someone is mean or he doesn’t get his way
-he can count to 100 (but always mixes up 15 and 16 for some reason, and forgets the number 80), can sight read about ten short words, knows his full name, address, and can do simple 1-5 math addition problems
-he LOVES when you tell stories right now and will ask for bedtime stories over and over.  it is also really fun to watch him use his imagination to make up his own stories
-still can’t say his L’s or R’s, so his name is “Weencun Wee Hodson” (Lincoln Lee Hodson)
-started pre-school this year (2x a week) and loves his teacher and doing art projects
-he is really into Angry Birds, dinosaurs, trucks, spiderman/superheroes, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates

For his birthday this year he begged me for Angry Birds cupcakes that he could bring to school.  I always try to do fun themes for his birthday each year.  Here are a few I’ve done in the past:

Lego Cake - didn't look nearly as good in person as I had envisioned. Oh well, he was only one and didn't know!

I saw a picture of these in a magazine and though, "I could make those!" Again, didn't turn out nearly as cute as the picture, but were fun.

Last year (3rd bday) his party was Dinosaur Themed and we made this super easy cake with figurines on top.

So, this year he wanted Angry Birds.  I went onto Pinterest and looked for some cute ideas but most of the cupcakes were Fondant based.  Finally I found one I thought I could copy.  Again, like every other year, they didn’t turn out nearly as cute as the picture I was trying to replicate, but oh well.

For those who aren’t familiar, this is what an Angry Bird looks like (it’s a free game you can download on your iPhone/iPad):
Angry-Birds-2
At first, I added a marshmallow on the bottom to create the different colors on the angry bird, but I decided that just looked weird.
Angry Birds Cupcakes
So, I finished the cupcakes up without anything on the bottom.  I got the first few done and the little man came over and said, “Mom!  I wanted Angry Birds, not Elmo!” lol, so then I tried to make the eyebrows more “angry” looking and he said that was better.

For the assembly I used:
-red sprinkles for ‘feathers’
-normal cupcake mix and icing
-red cupcake liners (can’t really tell from this picture – got them at hobby lobby)
-black gel for the eyebrows (was kind of messy, black licorice strings would have been better but I couldn’t find them)
-candy eyes (found at hobby lobby)
-orange slices cut in half for the beaks

This wasn’t healthy or clean at all, but just wanted to share this fun little treat I made for my little guy’s preschool class.  We are having his party on Saturday with some of his friends from school and soccer.  Check out my Pinterest ‘parties’ board (click here) for some of the ideas I am going to try to use for the party!

We always try to do a fun cake or cupcakes.  What are some other fun traditions you guys have for birthdays?

Your Friend,
Natalie
