I have a really big family. I am one of ten siblings between each side of my family, and not all of them live near me. Recently I made time to visit some of my family in Utah who I don’t get to see very often, and I was able to see some friends that I don’t see often, either. My kids got to see cousins and family members and grandparents and have more experiences and create more memories.

This trip got me thinking about why it’s important to make time for the things that you want to happen. Not just in terms of visiting family or seeing friends, but in terms of every other little thing in life that you wish was a possibility but hasn’t happened yet. If you want to do something, you have to actually do it instead of waiting for it to fall into place. The way that you make that happen is to set goals, take the appropriate steps, and to make a plan.

Don’t Expect Things to Happen, Make Them Happen

I see my family in Utah about once a year, but it’s something I have to make a priority in order for it to happen. The same goes for my garden, for the places I travel, and even for my workouts. I feel like I’m always busy, but if I want something to happen, I’ve learned I need to make a plan to make it happen. I’ve found that it really helps me to write down my goals so I can start putting in the work to achieve them. Some are daily goals, others are monthly, some are yearly, etc. We always say things like, “I want to travel more, I want to spend more time with family, I want to eat better, I want to read more often,” etc. But it’s not enough to want it, you have to make a plan to make it happen instead of just expecting it to happen. It’s up to you to make the time to reach your goals, instead of hoping that you’ll get some free time. Plus, making the time shows those you love that you’re willing to make them a priority, if seeing loved ones is one of your goals.

Put it in Your Calendar

Once you’ve written down your goals, it’s helpful to put things in your calendar so you’ll actually do them. This is a great way to actually make time. I don’t know about you, but if it’s not in my calendar it’s like it doesn’t exist! Time won’t just appear, you have to make it a priority. If you want to visit family, get in touch and pick a date. This will help to save money, find accommodations, and make a plan. If you want to eat healthier, write down a meal plan (my Our Womanhood program helps with meal planning if you need help!), and if you want to read more, put it on your calendar to read 10 pages every night. I’ve found that if you don’t make the time for the things you want, you won’t get them.

It’s such a simple concept, to make time for the things you want to make happen. However, life tends to rush by us. I always said I’d do something after things slow down, after this crazy week, or when I’m not so busy. Next thing I know, the week is over, summer is gone, or another year went by. It’s important to make time because time will never just appear. If you want something to happen, you’ve gotta make it happen!

What are your goals? Have you been able to make the time to make them happen?

Talk to you soon!
