If you’re like me, maybe you have found that your motivation comes in cycles. I think we all have phases every now and again when we lose motivation and our desire to workout. During these phases I have learned that it is important to focus and fall back on my habits. Your habits will keep you going. For example, if you don’t feel like going to the gym but have established a habit or routine of going at a particular time, maintain that habit by focusing on just getting yourself to the gym. Your workout may be as simple as getting on the treadmill and watching Netflix, but you maintained your habit. Maintain the habit of keeping nutritious foods in the house so that when you feel like snacking you have only healthy foods to snack on. It may feel like you are just “going through the motions” sometimes and that is okay. Maintaining these habits and not beating yourself up when you lack intensity and motivation is the secret to long term consistency.
Eventually your motivation will come back, it always does. Remind yourself that the “off” cycles do not make you a failure. Like you always hear me say, “Losing the ‘all or nothing’ mentality was one of the healthiest decisions I ever made.” Sometimes, the hardest part is just lacing up your shoes and getting out the door.
